Informed by building elements as well as domestic items and materials, his objects and sculptures are situated in the context of the home and its narrative as a self-made, Arcadian refuge in the digital age. He treats his works like digital objects whose surfaces are but an interchangeable image, i. e. a (photo-)texture applied afterward incongruent with the object’s shape and materiality. Yet, by visibly using temporary fasteners and DIY-joining techniques in a repairing and prosthetic manner, surfaces are treated like material skin instead of an image. The resulting instability of belonging is central to his work. Paul Knopf is currently pursuing his Master of Fine Arts at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia where he was awarded an Osborne Graduate Fellowship. His work has been part of exhibitions in Athens, Berlin, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Kassel, Tokyo, Weimar, and Zella-Mehlis, and it has been published in Class Favourite Magazine, PORT, and blank magazine among others. Before joining the Dodd, he was part of the International Media Architecture Master Studies—a joint program between the University at Buffalo, SUNY (USA) and the Bauhaus-University Weimar (GER). During his time in Buffalo, he was a member of BICA School—a free, collective art school at the Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art. In parallel to his undergraduate studies in architecture and after a semester abroad at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (Austria), he joined the class for Sculpture, Object, Installation of Prof. Björn Dahlem at Bauhaus-University Weimar. He received scholarships from the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (German Academic Scholarship Foundation) and the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). The two works are transplants of the Introspective Monument (A:I:M), which was built into the left part of the Halle on the campus of the Bauhaus-University Weimar by Till Röttjer. It is an interior within the interior and can only be experienced halfway from the outside. Thus, the viewer is encouraged to venture inside the monument. My works invert the A:I:M. On the one hand, they understand its inner dimensions as an outside, and on the other hand, as collapsing into a plane. However, I do not understand them as reproductions or models. Neither am I interested in looking for monumentality in space nor size, but rather in itself as heaviness. I don't understand introspection as an abstract retrieval into oneself but as a way of dealing with a counterpart. In this way, it becomes a projection from a distance. Closeness thus only arises through physicality and materiality, through what something weighs, through what is brought along, and memory. the intrinsic agency of surfaces and their role in constructing our realities in the wake of a growing sense of instability and dead futures. Thus, surfaces aren’t only treated as images but through stitching, nailing, stapling, and gluing them together as immediate material itself to thwart dissociating whilst wandering amongst the ruinous. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The work Adrift was specifically developed to be installed in the stairwell of a private collector in Buffalo, NY. Drift wood and a branch collected at the shores of Lake Erie after a heavy storm form its linear spine. Next to it is a hollow structure made from plywood that resembles a kind of grid. On the opposite wall is a flower-esque, cloud-esque light sculpture that illuminates the stairwell in different hues at night.
